The song has a fascinating history. At least as early as the Mayflower, the song existed, but it wasn’t a nursery rhyme. It was a bawdy drinking song that began by talking about love, but in later stanzas, it became more suggestive, and there are numerous versions of it in varying levels appropriateness. During the antebellum period in the U.S. the lyrics softened so it was more of the love song we know today.

Lavenders Blue was one of the very first songs my mother taught me to play on the piano a long time ago. I remember thinking how awesome it would be to find a wife. I loved the song. It has stuck with me all of these years. Cinderella (2015) has a very pretty version but it’s a slightly different tune than I learned, which you can find here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ow25lvYoKXo. The version I am more familiar with is done by Burl Ives here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oH5q11bG3zk
